When the system boot files are on a separate partition, it is easier to remove a Windows partition or replace the partition with a new copy of Windows.Īdd system utility partitions before the Windows partition, because in the event that a full-system recovery is needed, this partition order helps to prevent the recovery tools from overwriting the system and utility partitions.įor information about how to configure system partitions while you apply images, see Capture and Apply Windows, System, and Recovery Partitions. The user can then select which operating system to boot. If a computer has multiple operating systems, such as Windows 11 and Windows 10, the computer displays a list of operating systems. You can install Windows on hard drives that are based on any of the following types of firmware: The partition types must match the firmware of the computer. For more information, see BitLocker Drive Encryption. To enhance the security of the Windows partition or a data partition, you can use BitLocker to encrypt the partition. You can create separate system, recovery, Windows, or data partitions. You can divide your hard drive into multiple partitions. To learn more, see Configure multiple hard drives and Hard disk location path format. Different computers that have the same drive configuration can have different disk numbers. The system might assign different numbers to drives when you reboot. They’ll also need to be adjacent to each other on the drive, or else you’ll need to do a bit more work. The system drive might not appear as disk 0 in the DiskPart tool.

Just get those files off the partition as they’ll be lost when you delete the partition. If there isn’t room, you can temporarily move the files to an external hard drive or USB flash drive. If you have data files on that partition already, you should move them from the data partition you’ll be deleting to your system partition you want to keep.

If you have a new PC with one partition containing your system files and an empty partition labelled “DATA” or something similar, we’ll be erasing the empty partition. We’ll start first by deleting one of the partitions. Delete One Partition and Expand the Other If they do, you won’t normally be able to combine these multiple drives into a single partition without some more advanced tricks. Note that some PCs actually have multiple hard drives in them.
